A computer virus is a program or piece of code that operates by attaching itself to some other program or downloaded file. When this program starts, the virus code is unintentionally started also. It often replicates itself and infects other programs or documents on the PC. A computer virus spreads mainly via e-mail attachments, downloadable files from the Internet or Storage Media such as USB Memory Sticks. Virus infection can be prevented by installing (and maintaining) anti-virus software, among other strategies, some of which are outlined in this information sheet.

A computer virus can seriously damage or completely destroy files or software on a computer. The result is that files may be lost permanently, programs may not function correctly or the overall performance of a computer may be slowed down. The process involved in repairing the damage can be time consuming and expensive.

How Does a Virus Work?

There are two ways in which a virus behaves when activated.

Direct Action – the virus is activated immediately, frequently relying on other programs to infect and carry out specific behaviour encoded by the author of the virus.

Memory Resident – the virus is loaded into the computer’s memory and is activated by a triggering event. A triggering event can be either a date or a certain combination of keystrokes.

Anti-Virus Software

It’s essential to have a good Internet Security or Anti-Virus package installed on your PC. Free programs don’t always provide the same level of protection that a paid Anti-Virus program provides. There are many different Internet Security & Anti-Virus programs available. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses, so it’s best to speak with a technician prior to purchase to determine which product best suits your internet use.

Anti-Virus Updates

It’s important that your Internet Security or Anti-Virus program is up to date. With new viruses appearing daily, an up-to-date Anti-Virus program is an essential. Most programs automatically update, but it’s always a good idea to double check.

Windows Updates

Microsoft frequently release updates for Windows, many of which are important in protecting your PC from newly identified vulnerabilities. Having Automatic Updates enabled will ensure your PC receives any new updates from Microsoft.

Downloading Music & Movies

Avoid downloading music and movies from “P2P” or “Torrents”. While many people don’t like the idea of paying for music or movies when they can easily download them for free – it’s much safer purchasing your Music and Movies through a program like iTunes or Bigpond Music. P2P (Peer to Peer) and Torrents are littered with Viruses that are often disguised as a MP3 (Music) or Movies.

Email Links & Attachments

Avoid clicking on links and attachments in emails – even if you know the sender. There are many viruses that will infect a PC and then send itself to everyone in that PC’s address book. If you receive an email from someone you know with a link or an attachment, think twice before clicking!
